Breast Augmentation

The decision to undergo plastic surgery and especially breast augmentation or enlargement aborad is a very personal one. Patients choose to undergo such surgery for many reasons and it is not unusual for your surgeon to discuss your reasons for surgery with you. Your surgeon will be able to best advise you regarding the potential outcome of your surgery and also to keep your expectations realistic.

Once you have decided that this is a procedure that you wish to have done and that you wish to have it with one of our highly recommended surgeons in South Africa, please submit an enquiry form so that we can initiate the consultation process between yourself and your surgeon. You will be required to fill in a detailed medical enquiry form and submit it together with digital photos as required by the surgeon. It is also recommended that patients over the age of 40 undergo a mammogram before proceeding with breast augmentation surgery. We will then assist you with all arrangements.

Breast Augmentation surgery has many variables. Such as the type of implant used (silicone vs. saline, round vs. anatomical shape), incision placement (in the crease under the breast, in the armpit, or under the areola) and implant placement either outside or beneath the pectoralis major muscle of the chest. Surgeons in South Africa may or may not have a preference regarding these variables and you may also have a preference. It is always good to discuss these options with your surgeon before making any final decisions. Do your research and prepare the questions you would like to ask your surgeon. Be assured that the aim of surgery is always to provide the patient with the desired breast size and shape with minimal scarring, no matter what surgical approach or implant type is used.

Once you arrive for cosmetic surgery in Cape Town, you will meet with your surgeon for a pre-operative consultation where the final decisions will be made regarding your surgery. Measurements and pre-operative photos will be taken and you will have the opportunity to “trial” various implants sizes and profiles to help you and the surgeon make the decision on which implant to be used. Your height, weight and age will also influence the choice of implant size. You will have an opportunity to meet the anesthetist to discuss your anesthetic options before surgery.

Your surgery will usually be performed under general anesthetic and you may need to spend one night in hospital. The operation itself will generally take one to two hours. As with any surgery where implants are used, there is an inherent risk of infection. You will be given IV-antibiotics during surgery, and your implants may also be soaked in an antibiotic ‘cocktail’ prior to placement. Infections post-op are very rare.

Generally, your recovery will be quite comfortable with slight to moderate pain for the first few days. If your implants were placed partially beneath the chest muscle, you may experience more pain, but pain-medication will be provided to ease this. Some bruising may also occur around the breasts and transient changes in nipple sensation may occur. You will be required to wear a special supporting bra after surgery. A post-operative stay in Cape Town is advised.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast Lift surgery or mastoplexy is a procedure performed to raise and reshape sagging breasts (usually as a result of weight loss, ageing or pregnancy and breastfeeding). Surgery will restore breast firmness and position. Different surgeons will have different preferences of surgical technique. If more volume is needed the surgeon may suggest enhancement with breast implants. Alternatively, your surgeon may suggest breast reduction together with a breast lift if the volume needs to be reduced.

Once you have decided that this is a procedure that you wish to have done, and that you wish to have it done in Cape Town with one of our highly recommended surgeons, please submit an enquiry form so that we can initiate the consultation process between yourself and your surgeon. You will be required to fill in a detailed medical enquiry form and submit it together with digital photos as required by the surgeon. You will have the opportunity to communicate with your surgeon when deciding on the procedure.

Once you arrive for your affordable cosmetic surgery, you will meet with your surgeon for a pre-operative consultation where the final decisions will be made regarding your surgery. Measurements and pre-operative photos will be taken, and if implants are to be used or reduction is to be performed, sizing will be decided upon. You will also have an opportunity to meet with the anesthetist to discuss your anesthetic options before surgery.

Surgery is performed under general anesthetic and you may need to stay in hospital for one night. Incisions are usually made around the areola and in the crease of the breast. These incisions are then joined by a vertical incision. The appropriate amount of skin is then removed to enable tightening of the skin, and some surgeons may also “reshape” the actual breast content, or place an implant at this stage. The nipple is repositioned in a higher position (the nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying tissue which means that sensation and the ability to breastfeed should remain unaffected). Dissolving stitches will be used to close the incisions.

Post-operatively, you may have small drainage tubes in place and you will be required to wear a surgical bra for a post-operative period. You will also be provided with pain medication. If you have drains they will be removed within a few days and your dressings will be checked and changed or removed. Bruising and swelling will take two to four weeks to settle down.

Generally your recovery will be relatively quick. Tenderness will abate after a few days and movement will become easier. Only gentle movement is recommended in order to prevent unwanted bleeding and your surgeon will advise you as to your post-operative activities. A post-operative stay in Cape Town of ten days is advised.

As with other plastic surgery procedures, results are not always immediately visible. Do not be alarmed if your breasts take some time to assume a natural shape and for scarring to fade. A complete recovery may take up to 12 months. Temporary loss of sensation is common and can also take up to a year to recover. Your chosen cosmetic surgery in Cape Town will provide you with memories to accompany the procedure for many years to come.

Breast Reduction Surgery

As with all breast surgeries, the reasons for undergoing breast reduction surgery are numerous, and it is a very personal decision. Usually women seek this surgery after years of back, neck and shoulder pain, poor posture and bra-strap pain from cumbersome breasts. Most patients are extremely happy with the results of their surgery. They find it easier to find clothing that fits, are able to participate in sports, and their confidence and self-image are vastly improved.

It is possible that your surgeon may recommend that you undergo a mammogram before booking your procedure.

Once you arrive in Cape Town, you will meet with your surgeon for a pre-operative consultation where the final decisions will be made regarding your surgery. Measurements and pre-operative photos will be taken, and your surgeon will note the size and shape of your breasts, skin quality and nipple and areola placement. This is the time to discuss your desired breast size, and any other improvements you may want made to your breasts. Your surgeon will be able to tell you how realistic your goals are and advise you accordingly. You will also have an opportunity to meet with the anesthetist to discuss your anesthetic options before surgery.

Your surgery will be performed in a local hospital in South Africa and will usually be done under general anesthesia, and you may need to spend one night in hospital. The surgery itself will usually take two to three hours. Your surgeon will make three incisions, namely around your areola, from the areola down to the crease of the breast, and along the crease. Fat, tissue and excess skin are then removed to give the desired breast size and firmness. The areola and nipple are then repositioned (and the areola can be reduced for cosmetic reasons). Dissolvable sutures will be used. Sometimes your surgeon may also perform liposuction of the underarm region to reduce excess fat deposits.Post-operatively you may have small drainage tubes in place. You will be required to wear a surgical bra to maintain symmetry for a post-operative period. Pain medication will be provided to you, and pain should abate after a few days. If you have drains they will be removed within a few days and your dressings will be checked and changed or removed.

After your cosmetic surgery in Cape Town, your initial recovery will take ten days to two weeks, and you are advised to remain in Cape Town during this recovery period.
